How to measure hydraulic hose assembly length

Use clear end points, record fitting orientation, and keep finished length separate from hose cut length.

Finished assembly length: record the exact start and end reference points

Measure in this order

  1. Lay the assembly naturally

Remove tight coils without stretching the hose. Do not pull it straight under tension just to gain length.

  2. Choose the correct end points

Use the fitting manufacturer’s measurement convention. The reference may be an end face, sealing seat, elbow centerline, or another defined point.

  3. Record the finished length

Write the unit and measurement method beside the number. Photograph the ruler or tape with both reference points visible when practical.

  4. Record elbow clocking

Place one bent fitting in the reference position and record the rotation of the other. Do not twist the hose to make an incorrect orientation fit.

  5. Calculate cut length only with verified allowances

Cut length = finished assembly length − fitting allowance 1 − fitting allowance 2. Use the exact manufacturer’s fitting and crimp data.

What changes the measurement point?

End typeWhat to confirm
Straight male or stemWhether length is taken to the end, seat, or another manufacturer-defined datum.
Female swivelWhether the reference is the nut end, sealing face, or seat location.
Bent fittingThe measurement datum and the clocking angle relative to the other fitting.
Flange or special endThe centerline or face convention in the applicable manufacturer drawing.
