Hydraulic hose terms in plain language

A workshop glossary for dash size, DN, working pressure, bend radius, fitting seats, crimp terms, and more.

Assembly overall length

The finished length of the complete hose assembly measured between manufacturer-defined end points.

Bend radius

The radius of the hose bend measured to the hose centerline. Never route tighter than the manufacturer’s minimum value.

Burst pressure

A laboratory failure-pressure value. It is not the allowable continuous system pressure.

C value / fitting allowance

The fitting length used with the manufacturer’s assembly formula to convert overall length to hose cut length.

Clocking

The rotational relationship between two bent fittings on the same hose assembly.

Crimp diameter

The specified outside diameter of the crimped coupling, measured by the method given in the approved crimp data.

Cut length

The hose length before fittings are attached. It is not automatically the same as finished assembly length.

Dash size

A nominal size code commonly based on sixteenths of an inch. It is a sizing clue, not a complete thread or fitting identity.

DN

Nominal diameter designation used to describe approximate hose bore size in millimetres.

Hose ID / bore

The inside diameter through which fluid flows.

Impulse

Repeated pressure cycling that tests or loads a hose assembly over time.

Insertion depth

The marked distance the hose must enter a compatible fitting before crimping.

JIC

A hydraulic fitting family commonly identified by a 37-degree flare sealing surface.

Layline

The printed information along the hose cover, normally including manufacturer and product or specification details.

NPT / NPTF

North American tapered thread families. Confirm exact thread and sealing requirements before use.

ORFS

O-ring face seal: a flat-face hydraulic connection that seals with an O-ring.

Proof pressure

A controlled test pressure defined by the applicable standard or manufacturer; not normal working pressure.

SAE flange

A flanged hydraulic connection using a flange head, O-ring, and clamp arrangement.

Skive / no-skive

Whether hose cover or inner material must be removed before installing the fitting, as specified by the coupling system.

Working pressure

The maximum continuous pressure assigned to the exact hose assembly under specified service conditions.
